The small cabinet card below is from C. W. Calohan, Photographer, Gallipolis, Ohio and the one at left from John Carroll Studio, Wilmington, Ohio. Both exhibit the typical androgyny of pre-adolescence where often only grooming, behavior and dress are the sole outward indicators of gender. The ornate shawl and pendant worn by the youth at left further complicates obvious gender identification.
